Did Anyone Claim California’s $1.5 Million? The Deadline Just Passed and the Answer Is Ugly

    Key Takeaways

    • Varso Gas sold a $1.53M Powerball ticket whose 180-day claim window ended Aug. 20.
    • California schools could receive $1.53M, adding to $1.1B in unclaimed prizes since 1985.
    • Varso Gas gets a 0.5% bonus, about $7,500, whether the Powerball prize is claimed or not.

The 180-day clock ran out on 8/20 for a $1,532,761 Powerball ticket sold at Varso Gas in Escondido, and the last pre-deadline reporting still had no winner in sight. The slip matched five white balls from the 2/21 drawing, but not the Powerball, which is why California’s tighter claim window applied. If nobody made it to the California Lottery in time, state law routes the money to California public schools, another entry in a system that has already sent more than $1.1 billion in unclaimed prizes to education since 1985. Either way, Varso Gas still gets its cut: “Because they sold a prize of more than a million dollars, they get 0.5% of that, which is about $7,500,” spokesperson Daniel Kelly said.

A ticket, a timer, and a missing claimant

There are plenty of tech stories about automation and digital payments, but this one still hinges on a slip of paper. A Powerball prize worth $1,532,761 was sold at Varso Gas in Escondido, California, tied to the February 21, 2026 drawing. The 180-day claim deadline fell on August 20, 2026, and reporting just before that date said no one had come forward.

The numbers that almost hit the jackpot

The ticket wasn’t a jackpot winner, but it was close in the way that makes your stomach drop. It matched the five white balls 27, 28, 36, 48, and 49, and missed only the Powerball number, 21. That “5-of-6” result is exactly the kind of near-perfect hit that can get lost in a kitchen drawer, especially if the buyer expected the Powerball itself to be the make-or-break line.

California’s payout rules add a twist

In California, this prize category had a hard 180-day window, unlike jackpot prizes that can be claimed for up to a year. If the prize goes unclaimed, state law directs the money to California public schools, turning a personal windfall into public funding. Over time, that pipeline has grown enormous: the California Lottery says unclaimed prizes for education have topped $1.1 billion since ticket sales began in 1985.

    binance

There’s also a math wrinkle that’s easy to miss. California pays major non-jackpot Powerball prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the payout can float based on ticket sales and the number of winners. That helps explain why $1,532,761 is higher than the roughly $1 million many people associate with a 5-of-6 match in other states.

Even without a winner, the retailer gets paid

One party is guaranteed to see money either way: the store that sold the ticket. Daniel Kelly, a California Lottery spokesperson, told local TV, “Because they sold a prize of more than a million dollars, they get 0.5% of that, which is about $7,500.”

That carrot shows up in foot traffic. Varso Gas manager Michael Metti described a late rush: “Everyone’s coming in getting a lottery [ticket]; hopefully, someone wins again, but yeah, everyone’s coming in; it’s been very busy; I think I’ve done a couple hundred transactions today,” he said. It’s a small snapshot of a bigger habit: spokesperson Carolyn Becker has said the California Lottery averages $40-50 million annually in unclaimed prizes over the last 5 to 10 years.
